Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Primary/Secondary)

Many teachers will tell you they chose their profession and they stick with it because of the kids – the students they interact with every day.

Making a difference in the education and upbringing of the next generation of young Australians is a privilege, a responsibility and also a source of – at least occasional – joy for teachers. Southern Cross offers combined degree programs which enable you to graduate with specialised skills, knowledge and experience teaching whatever age group of students you choose.

There are four Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education programs to choose from:

• Primary/Early childhood- qualified to work with and teach children from six-weeks-old through to primary school (12-years-old).
• Primary – qualified to work with and teach children throughout primary school
• Primary / Secondary – qualified to work with and teach children throughout primary and secondary school
• Secondary – qualified to work with and teach children throughout secondary school

With expert educators providing guidance on teaching methods, assessment and educational leadership, you will develop strong practical and theoretical skills, honing your teaching practice in a series of placements throughout the course.

Each stream provides opportunities to also develop specialised knowledge and skills relating to the age group you choose to teach – equipping you for a satisfying teaching career.

Career Opportunities

Dual qualification: graduates can work as both a primary school teacher and a secondary school teacher (in English, Mathematics, Modern History or Geography). 

Professional Recognition

Courses are accredited with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) and nationally through the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).

Usually, Australian teacher qualifications are recognised internationally, but students need to check with potential employers and teacher registration authorities in other countries regarding accreditation requirements.

All Initial Teacher Education students across Australia need to successfully complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) prior to completing their course. In line with accreditation requirements, at Southern Cross University the test needs to be successfully completed prior to undertaking the final professional experience placement.

Professional Placement

Students complete a program of in-school professional teaching experiences during the course, culminating in an extended in-school development experience, to demonstrate their capabilities as both primary and secondary school teachers.

Major Areas of Study

In order to teach in secondary schools, students must undertake eight units including two secondary curriculum specialisations units and six units from one of the following areas:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Modern History 
  • Geography.

Some units in this course are only delivered online. Some online units include on-campus workshops.

Assessment methods

The assessment methods used in this course vary from unit to unit. Most units have progressive assessment with grades typically allocated across a combination of assessment tasks due at different times during the study period. Some units may also include a formal examination at the end of the study period. Assessment requirements for each unit are advised in writing to students at the commencement of each study period with clear guidelines, due dates, and the weighting for each assessment task.

Teaching methods

On-campus students experience a variety of teaching approaches including lectures, tutorials, online activities and video-linked or podcast virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.

Our online study option is highly interactive and strives to promote collaboration and a sense of community. Students may receive a combination of podcast or video-linked lectures, electronic study materials, workshops, online discussion forums and virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.
